what is the advantage of having XML objects being passed back and forth? My communication to the hardware is very basic and I don't want to implement an xml parser to be able to react to the commands.. is there an easier way? like sending just strings (for example "heater on")? that would be great and I could use my own protocol..

Hi Mark,
Using XML as the communication protocol was a deliberate design decision. It is a standardized, modern way of transmitting information between disparate computer systems in a debuggable fashion.
One of the huge reasons we chose XML was that we can add new features to controls without breaking backward compatibility.
There are numerous good XML parsing libraries available for the Raspberry Pi in almost any language you care to use. You won't have to roll your own.
We have provided the source code for XML parser based server in Python called RapiConnectServer on our website.
We will also be supporting JSON in the future for a lighter weight protocol.
Thank you for your comment,
BP
