I wanted to be able to test the lightning detector, so I purchased the Simulator. At first it worked well, producing 3 different distance lightning "hits". Now all it does is trigger the "disturber detected" message, no matter how close I hold it to the Thunder Board.
It lasted about 1 or 2 days - what now?

This has something to do with the noise environment in your area. This is a very sensitive circuit. A disturber is a man made noise in your environment, but remember the disturber may just increase the general noise in the area so that what ever the simulator produces just puts it over the threshold into the disturber realm.
Did you watch John's video on how all this stuff works and what it means? That should help.

SDL: NO! The "Disturber" signal is happening ONLY when I activate the SDL Thunder Board Lightning Simulator. Please read what I wrote!!! I do *NOT* get this signal until I try to test with your testing device. It worked when I first got it, producing 3 different levels (distances) but now ONLY triggers the "Disturber" message. It appears to me that the Thunder Board Lightning Simulator has failed. I would appreciate some help with this.
Thanks, Will

My description is correctly describing how the chip adjusts the internal threshold levels. What was a lightning bolt yesterday may register as a disturber today because something is happening in the environment that has pumped up the noise.
Is your unit still inside, or is it outside? Post a picture of the area in which the lightning detector is placed and maybe I can spot something.

OK I will post a picture but...
The unit has not moved. It is in the same location as before. When the simulator first arrived it would trigger lightning events, and 3 different distances. Now it only triggers "disturber" events. I have reset and rebooted the SkyWeather. I have tested with the testxxxxx.py program. I can no longer make it trigger a lightning event.
It's dead, Jim...

Has anything else changed in the room? New cell phone placement, new monitor placement, something different.
Can you move the unit away from your electronics and see if anything changes?
It is a sensitive device.
That's why I would like a picture.

The weather station is outside, mounted on a fence. Nothing has changed in the environment. No electronics have been moved or changed. As I said earlier, when I first got the lightning simulator, it worked as expected - each of the 3 buttons produced a lightning event and each was at the expected distance. Now all it does is cause the "disturber" message. Either the sensor has gone wonky, or the simulator has...

OK. That helps a lot. It's probably not an environmental issue.
Could you share what your parameters are for the lightning detector?
Hmm. Now we have to figure out how to determine which is bad. Are you powering the Lightning Simulator differently that before?
