We are exploring Power Over Ethernet (POE) for this device. Any immediate red flags, experience, or things we should be thinking about before we go down this path?
The reason we are doing POE is that we don't have access to wifi on the roof of our building, but do have access to ethernet, so we are going to run a hard line for data... and hopefully... power. If not we will run solar, but want to try POE first.

Troy,
Perfectly reasonable thing to try. The current levels are dominated by the Raspberry Pi on average so you should have no problem. Having a hardline for data does solve possible issues. Solar is an awfully lot of fun, especially with the new SolarMAX products.

Update: We powered the station for the first time today using POE (power over ethernet). The student in charge of the project was able to SSH into pi. Success!! We'll see how POE holds up in production.
