Update - I still suspect that a significant part of the problem is "false tips" of the bucket based on wind - I need to do some more correlation there to be 100% sure.
I'm "throwing hardware at the problem"; just ordered a wireless tipping bucket from Accurite, that I can mount on the roof our our pump shed. Yeah, it's one more sensor; but, I can mount it such that there's no way the wind will get it, AND, it will be a whole lot easier to clean out the bird "stuff", dirt and spiders than having do take down my 10' mast.
IHMO putting a rain gauge that high up is "suboptimal" engineering for lots of reasons - cleaning, heating (if needed), wind loading. false trips and probably a few more. You want the T/H and wind sensors up out of "ground effect"; but why the rain gauge? My guess is that the "marketing" had more to do with that decision than engineers.

Clay,
Yes, it is suboptimal. Cost is one issue, however.
Remind me what WeatherRack version you have. 1 or 2?

Clay,
Thanks for your interest in the issue that I've been observing. Two things:
1. In my case, the issue with the cumulative rain reading is not wind. I have my WeatherRack mounted to a beam at the end of my second story deck with 1/2" pipe. There is no way that the unit is being moved by the wind.
2. The issue that I'm seeing is that the cumulative rain reading is moving up & down rather than monotonically up. For details, see the attachments that I made to an earlier post.
Again, thanks for your interest in my post.

Not sure if mine is a WeatherRack 1 or 2 - is there an easy way to tell?

Wires - WeatherRack1
No wires - WeatherRack2

I just checked your github site for an update to the SDL_ESP32_WeatherRack2 software. I didn't see any update. Do you still have it scheduled? (Your last message to me indicated you had it scheduled for early November. It's now early December.)
Thanks for you reply.
