Can the thunderboard be substituted with any I2C AS3935 assuming that it's set for the same I2C address? I have a DFRobot version on hand and would love to use it instead of buying another one.

Fleabeard,
The AS3935 is a very finicky part when it comes to the I2C bus. Maybe theirs will work, maybe it won't. You might have to change the address. You might have to change the bus loading. Totally unknown. We revised our part three times before we got reliable behavior in all of our defined use cases.

It does work as long as it's set to 0x02 but absolutely will not work with an SHT30 also plugged in to the I2C bus.

Not surprised. I don't know what they did on their board. We had to work to get ours to work.
