It handles Arduino projects very well in my humble opinion. Here's a screenshot of an Arduino project built in the Arduino IDE compiled within PlatformIO.
Essentially, it does everything the Arduino IDE does, compiles, uploads, serial monitor, board selection and upgrade, library selection and upgrade. Biggest difference is the additional features like an outline of the current file you're working on and being able to search across files for declarations, etc., for example.
