It appears my RTL-SDR Dongle took a dump, It feels hot so there is power going to it, No indicator light and its not being seen by the PI. I usually use NooElec, have had good luck with them in a marine Environment, I Use it to receive AIS signals from other ships and plot it on a char plotter. Will any nano sized RTL-SDR work with the software and scripts 433mghz is in about every range of RTL SDR's I have seen but I know some use different chip sets.

Most SDRs should work, but we have not tested any other but the one we ship.

festeraeb,
I took you up on the challenge! I looked in my parts bin and found an RTL-SDR AND a NooElec Smartee dongle.
I tested both of them in my SkyWeather2 and they work just fine - with a caveat.
You MUST use an antenna designed for 433MHz. The antenna that came with the SkyWeather2 dongle will not work with either the RTL-SDR or NooElec dongles (Different connector).
When I first tested the dongles, I knowingly used an antenna not designed for 433MHz. I did get data from the SkyWeather2 and indoor TH sensor - but it was sporadic. When I switched to a 433MHz antenna I got a signal from the sensors every minute.
The take-away here is two-fold: 1) Use the right antenna, and 2) These dongles may work, but they are not officially supported by SwitchDoc Labs.
I would not hesitate to use either one in my device.

Yes, the classic antenna problems! Sopwith, you are right. To get the best range, you need to use an antenna that is tuned to 433MHz (or an integer multiple).
I would guess that 90% of the dongles out there will work. We chose this one specifically because of it's form factor!

Yeah, after about a year my RTL-SDR dongle kicked the bucket too. Thought I'd mention it here in case it isn't just an isolated incident. I'm up and running with a Nooelec now and it also gets pretty warm, but not like the dead one!
