Battery is charged, >3.8v. It was initially connected without checking polarity of wiring (oops! could use diode protection on board), and the board got hot instantly upon plugging it in and switching to on. Now that polarity is verified and checking it out, the LED for solar lites OK, but the battery does not. When all assembled and switched to on, no LED on this board or those attached with batt - when using solar it will lite the shown LED but nothing else. I assume a component in this board was damaged by reversed polarity from the batt. Happy to troubleshoot further with some guidance.

Look in the manual. We talk long and hard about batteries not purchased from Adafruit and Sparkfun.
I think you have blown the charge controller on the board. SunAirPlus4 will add a polarity diode.

Yep, try telling that to a 10 year old I see the SunAirPlus3 is on the store now, ordering.
