Hi BP,
I have an update for you. I think I'm getting to the source of the problem with the OLED Display.
A few minutes ago, I tested the OLED board on a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B V1.1 running the Version 8 of Jessie as shown here:
pi@raspberrypi:~/Adafruit_Python_SSD1306/examples $ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="8"
VERSION="8 (jessie)"
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian
HOME_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianForums"
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianBugs"
I installed just the Adafruit software for the SSD1306 just like a I did for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. Installed all the needed prerequisites as well. Verified that i2cdetect detected the OLED board at 0x3c. Ran the three examples and they worked! The OLED board does work! See the images.
So the question that needs to be answered is what is the difference between Raspberry Pi 2 Model B and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, as well as the Jessie version 8 and the very latest Raspbian Stretch OS available since April 2018? The version of Python being used on the Pi 2 is Python 2.7.9. The version on the Pi 3 is 2.7.13. While I'm at it, the OS version on the PI 3 is
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID=9"
VERSION="8 (stretch)"
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian
This new OS version must be used on the new Pi3 Model B+ versions. Can't go backwards. Believe me, I tried, the Pi won't boot with older OS's.
I hope this give you more clues. I would hate to have to go back and use an older Pi. I bought the P3 for the horsepower for what I am going to being doing.
Thanks.
John
