This week I ordered a fan from SwitchDoc for my SkyWeather, and followed the instructions on the blog for added the fan. Unfortunately the fan doesn't seem to work quite right. When I run the test, sometimes it doesn't start spinning when it's supposed to. Instead just makes a humming sound, or maybe spins half a turn and then makes the humming sound. Other times it does spin up and continues just fine until it turns off again.
Any suggestions on how to get the fan to work better? Or do I need a replacement?
Thanks!
EDIT: Quick follow-up. I tried connecting the fan instead to the 5V pin on an Arduino and it works perfectly every time. It just doesn't work right off the Grove PowerDrive connected to the Pi2Grover board.

Show me how you have it hooked up. I *suspect* you may have a bad Grove PowerDrive board. BTW, if you have the Grove PowerDrive board hooked up backwards, that is probably what it would do.
Do you have a Voltmeter? If so, measure the Yellow wire pin of the Output of the Grove PowerDriver board when the fan is on.

Yeah, I bought a PowerDrive from you just like the tutorial on your blog suggests.
This is deployed off-grid at my remote property so diagnosis is slow and difficult. I'll be out there again this weekend so I can verify that I'm not using the PowerDrive backwards and I'll check the voltage on yellow and report back.

Okay, two things. First, I had a momentary stupid and connected my multimeter with the wrong setting, and smoke came out of the SkyWeather somewhere. It now appears I get no voltage at all on pin 5 (at least through the Pi2Grove). Oops. I realized my mistake and moved the Grove cable from the 5/6 plug to the 12/13 plug. Then I got voltage, but it is usually about 2.75V. I did see about 5 once but never again. So I suspect you might be right that I got a bad GrovePower.
As far as the pin I shorted, I'm fine with reprogramming to use a different one (I've already made customizations to the code anyway), as long as they aren't already used by something else. Is pin 12 safe? I can check the docs and code more closely when I get home.
For now I'm leaving the fan disconnected and hopefully can get a replacement PowerGrove from you soon.

Tyrel,
Well, smoke tests violate the warranty, but I think I get get you a smoke coupon, so PM me.

Is it possible to connect the fan without the Power Drive board?

Sure, but you can't control it then. You won't be able to drive it from just a GPIO pin. Takes too much current.
