If you have a problem with reliability (the network partially dropping out - VNC and SSH not working, but you can still ping) and are using wired Ethernet, you will need to disable the SD Card Wifi Hostspot.
The SDL Raspberry Pi SD Card has a Wifi hotspot installed to aid with headless provisioning of the Raspberry Pi. If you are using a wired Ethernet cable, you will need to disable the hotspot. There is a bug in the TCP/IP stack that will eventually partially kill networking if you leave the hostAP running when you are using a wired port.
If you wish to use Ethernet with your Raspberry Pi using the SDCard, do the following:
Disable the Host AP script with the command
sudo systemctl disable autohotspot
In the /etc/dhcpcd.conf file remove the line that was added
nohook wpa_supplicant
Then reboot.
The autohotspot script will no longer have control of your wifi. Dnsmasq and hostapd can be uninstalled if you no longer need them.
