looking at the data there's only 7 days where it doesn't report rain.
using the following sql.
select TimeStamp, totalRain from WeatherData where totalRain < 0.1 group by DATE(TimeStamp); this gives me only 7 days with no precip.
is there a way to zero the rain gauge? could the gauge be bad?
what is it a total of all rain passing through the guage?
on weatherstem Storm rainfall see just seems to accumulate all precip. is rain in last hr based off the delta of totalRain?

The WeatherRack2 tracks total rain accumulation since the last time the rack was reset. As a result, a value > 0 will always be reported once rainfall has occurred.
Thanks,

what effect is there on the data when it's reset? what's the best practice on resetting it? is there a way to do it programmatically?

Resetting the weather rack will return the value to 0. I've not reset mine since deployment but I've thought about it for sure. I created a view on my database that shows the min and max values of cumulative so I had planned to reset during a period where I knew there would be no rain.
Thanks,
Jason

I was looking at this as well. Could we set a code to zeros the value after a certain amount of time with no change? On weatherstem it says storm total. I think we could add another MySQL variable that tracks total rain per system, total rain per year, total rain per storm, and rain since last reset. Maybe a code that resets it to zero at midnight for the year. and another that zeros the sensor after 6 hours of no change. I know this could be done post collection with data manipulation but we dont have that option for weatherStem

festeraeb,
Good ideas. We should rework the way rain is handled by SkyWeather2 in a comprehensive manner. I'll add that to the list of the next version (It will be started in late January at this point).

SDL. Any updates on this? I've had to reset my weather rack several times (troubleshooting the temp issue) and was looking for a way to recover the total rain for the season. It would be very useful to be able to pull different slices (this week, this month, this year, etc).

If you just look at the positive increments from reading to reading, sum those and then ignore negative increments, you end up with the total rainfall. Even across resets.

Does a reboot reset the weather rack?

Resetting the Pi does not reset the WeatherRack. Replacing/removing the WeatherRack battery will reset it. It will reset the rain gauge value to 0 and generate a new device ID.
