If you have decided to stick with an ethernet connection on your skyweather2 pi and don't want the builtin wifi to load up and be available, you can disable this by adding the following line to /boot/config.txt: dtoverlay=disable-wifi You should be completely sure you don't need onboard wifi and have a solid ethernet connection before you do this. This turns off the onboard wifi subsystem at boot and works on the current version of Raspbian shipped with the SDL SD cards. Here is one the possible procedures to accomplish turning off wifi and bluetooth subsystems as listed in raspberrytips.com/disable-wifi-raspberry-pi/You can open a terminal, connect via SSH, or edit the file directly on the SD card from your computer Open the config.txt file with nano: sudo nano /boot/config.txt Find the following line: # Additional overlays and parameters are documented /boot/overlays/README
And add these two lines under it: dtoverlay=disable-wifi dtoverlay=disable-bt The second line is for the Bluetooth module. Save and exit (CTRL+O, CTRL+X). Reboot your Raspberry Pi to check if everything work as expected. I did this on my skyweather2 pi so I would force the communications taking place to always be over the ethernet connection. Dow

I'd be very interested to know what this would do to the power usage!

I've read articles - forget where- sorry - that say they do save on power usage - especially the blue tooth. Don't remember all the details - again sorry. I normally record this info in OneNote for reference.
Also, if you are planning on using a USB WIFI Dongle you should also disable the onboard WIFI. If not, the wlan0 device will still be the on board and it will still get an DHCP IP. The dongle will become wlan1 and you will have to modify your dhcpcd.conf to make changes for the differences. By disabling onboard your USB dongle becomes wlan0.

Doxidad, You are correct. When I added a USB wifi dongle I had two interfaces but the onboard always got the default route assigned. That is why I ended up disabling the onboard wifi. Plus, I was testing reliability too. I'm sure it is possible to dig into the networking scripts and assign everything exactly as you want without disabling the wifi. But, it is very convenient to have not enabled at boot if ethernet is preferred. Dow

How do I know if the commands are working?

If you disable the WiFi in the /boot/config.txt file and do not have a USB WiFi dongle attached then reboot. run ifconfigyou should see devices lo & eth0 but not wlan0.

pagerman,
Is it possible that when you plugged in your ethernet and / or cellular modem you still had your WiFI running?
