Hi,
is it possible to use a bigger solar cell for the board? Lets say a 20-30w 12v panel and use a DC/DC converter to limit the voltage to 6v max?
6v solar cells are not enough to satisfy the current needed in the winter time.
Best regards Marc

This is my current plan B if my system requires more than 600ma to keep up. The documentation lists the max current input of 1500mA so be wary of that. I am unsure what protection the board has built in.

The board does not have >6V protection built in. You will fry the board. Yes, you can do the 12V to 6V max as long as you don't exceed the 6V max.
Thanks!

That was my plan to use a standard DC/DC converter. Do i need to look after a specific dc/dc converter or will anything work?

Just make sure it can handle the current you expect to generate.
